In 2005, Tuscan-bred oenologist Paolo Caciorgna was invited by his good friend Marco de Grazia to visit his winery in Etna and the vineyards producing the beautiful wines of Tenuta delle Terre Nere. “It does not take long to fall in love with the wine and the land from which they are born.” And thus began Paolo’s Etna adventure...
With the purchase of the .5 hectare vineyard Passo Cannone in the zone of Passopisciaro came about his first bottling N*Anticchia, meaning “a little” in Sicilian dialect, alluding to its miniscule production. The azienda was founded out of a fascination for the black porous lava hillsides of the great Sicilian volcano, home to the mysterious pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese, a varietal with large clusters, large berries and thin skins, thought to have arrived from ancient Greece. The vines are situated on the north side of Etna at an astonishing 700-800 meters above sea level, amongst the highest in Italy. While the unique terroir has been farmed organically from the very beginning, in 2012 Paolo introduced biodynamic practices to his work in the vines.
With each eruption adding a layer of virgin soil rich in potassium and other minerals, Etna is a whole other planet offering microterritories and a patrimony found nowhere else.
