Tenute Pietro Caciorgna, a small Italian organic farm in the heart of Tuscany has a bit of everything - crops, cattle, olive groves and of course, vines. In honor of his family, Paolo Caciorgna, oenologist and youngest son of Pietro, dedicated himself to cultivating Tuscany’s prince vine, Sangiovese, in its most natural of settings and with the greatest respect for the environment. In 2004 he produced the first vintage of Macchie, a powerful yet elegant expression of the noble Sangiovese that is a tribute to the beauty of the Tuscan landscape and its traditional “peasant culture.”
The 2,2 hectare vineyard Osteria delle Macchie is situated on a hill 250 meters above sea level in Casole d’Elsa, a little-known area recently awarded a D.O.C. classification. The farm produces three wines - Macchie, Alberaia and Macchie Passito - solely from Sangiovese whose vines are trained by the guyot-cane system, a system that requires a lot more work than the commonly-used cordone speronato, but that reaps excellent and well-balanced fruit production.
Pure, intense, unadulterated Sangiovese fruit showcasing the simplicity of the Tuscan way of life - this is the soul of Tenute Pietro Caciorgna and its wines.
