On the southern shores of Lake Garda, on a terrain steeped in 200 million years of history, stand the walls of the ancient Roveglia farmstead, the only surviving remnants of 15th century Lombardy architecture in the area. Today those stable walls adjoin a lodge dedicated to the story of wine and dating back to the end of the 19th century. It was then that Swiss businessman Federico Zweifel was driven by his love for the Lugana area and immigrated to establish Tenuta Roveglia. It was then, with the purchase of the first vines, that the course of Roveglia’s history changed. The story has passed down over four generations and is now in the hands of great-granddaughters Sara, Vanessa and Babettli.
The estate boasts 175 acres designated to vineyards, the most extensive in an area of Lugana long heralded for it wine by the ancient Roman poet Catullo, and now designated as premier cru. At an altitude of 50 meters above sea level, the terroir is relatively flat with a harsh calcareous clay soil, rich in mineral salts. It is planted primarily to Turbiana - the local dialect for Trebbiano di Lugana - but recent DNA studies have shown the grape varietal to be a bio-type of Verdicchio.
Winemaker Paolo Fabiani has taken Roveglia’s wines to yet another level, producing some of the most sought-after Lugana wines.
