Monacesca

“...our land is utterly distinctive and unrepeatable” affirms Aldo Cifola, second-generation winemaker at the helm of La Monacesca, a small azienda located in the Marche region of central Italy. The grapevine has grown and flourished in this corner of the earth for over 2,500 years from a few seeds of vitis vinifera found inside the tomb of a warrior prince of the Piceni people. Matelica, an area discovered by a band of Benedictine monks, lies in the Apennine Valley and at 1200 feet, its soil, rich in marine residuals and potassium, is well-suited to the cultivation of the verdicchio grape.

In the early sixties, Casmiro Cifola, Aldo’s father, marveled that no one had yet considered a winemaking venture in the area and went on to purchase some of the best land available, planted vineyards and established the first wine estate. He named it La Monacesca after the ancient monastery nearby. For La Monacesca, 1973 saw the release of their first Verdicchio di Matelica. Over the course of the years, other contiguous vineyard parcels were acquired, new vineyards were planted to verdicchio and sangiovese grosso, as well as to a few international varieties - Chardonnay and Merlot.

Today current production hovers around 160,000 bottles per year.
