Alto Piemonte was once the largest wine growing area in all of Italy, boasting over 40,000 hectares of land planted to its revered Nebbiolo. But with the ravages of phylloxera in the late 1800s, followed by the advent of World War II and the booming industrial revolution, the practice of viticulture was slowly abandoned and a mass exodus towards urban communities ensued.
Today this Alpine region 90 miles northeast of Alba is in full renaissance and experiencing a rebirth of sorts, thanks to a generation of vintners dedicated to renewing its winemaking traditions and reclaiming its former glory. La Prevostura, an estate once belonging to the Marquis La Marmora, is situated in Lessona, a small commune in the area of just 20 hectares of vines. In 2001 the young Bellini brothers took over the estate and its 5 hectares planted to the native varietals of Nebbiolo, Vespolina and Croatina. Unlike the calcareous terroir of the Langhe, soils here are acidic and rich in old marine sand and clay deposits. This unique composition imparts remarkable grace, aromatics and finesse to the wines - think Nebbiolo with a “Burgundian” profile.
With the recent joining of oenologist Luca de Marchi (Proprietá Sperino) to the team, there is no doubt that La Prevostura will continue on its path to reaching new heights and producing gems of exquisite elegance, true to their terroir.
