Fourth generation winemaker Alberto Pezzuoli is at the helm of Azienda Agricola Pezzuoli, a family estate founded back in 1932. Originally situated in Carpi, the winery moved after the second World War to its current location in the hilly zone of Maranello in Emilia Romagna. The family vineyards span 110 hectares at an altitude of about 400 meters. Using only estate-grown grapes, Pezzuoli produces all three Lambruschi DOC Modenesi: Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, and Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro.
The DOC of Grasparossa di Castelvetro, the smallest wine producing region south of Modena, requires that all wines be comprised of at least 85% Lambrusco Grasparossa. This clone produces dry, full-bodied, dark violet colored wines and is usually the most tannic of the Lambruscos. In contrast, the Lambrusco di Sorbara is fresh, more delicate in structure, lighter in color, and beautifully fragrant.
Unlike the mass-produced Lambrusco, these wines are works of an artisan keen on seeking the best expression of his terroir. Furthermore, Alberto is in the process of converting from sustainable to organic farming practices.
