The agricultural estate of Santoleri has been in the family since ‘600 and is situated in one of the most privileged farming regions of Abruzzo, extending hundreds of acres between the confounds of Caprafico and Crognaleto, in the Guardiagrele countryside. The vineyards were planted in 1968 and claim a favorable spot at the base of the Maiella mountain in the Appenines, which rises over 2,000 meters and is only 15 km from the Adriatic Sea, Its altitude and proximity to the sea create an ideal haven for grape-growing with its cool nocturnal temperatures, even during the hot summer months, thus preserving the grape’s precious aromas and acidity.
Of the 30 hectares of land planted to vines, approximately 80% are dedicated to the formidable Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, while the remainder is divided principally between the Sangiovese Grosso and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo varietals . Yields per hectare are kept deliberately lower than permitted by law to ensure the highest of quality. In 1981, Santoleri began the conversion to organic farming, choosing to abstain from “chemical intervention” and today has eliminated completely the use of pesticides, mineral fertilizers and other invasive products.
“From vineyard to table,” the azienda produces about 40,000 bottles annually.
